Contemporary Native American art on display at museum
BROOKINGS, S.D. – The South Dakota Art Museum presents a new exhibition titled, “Contemporary Native American Art,” that will be displayed through Aug. 30.
The pieces are on loan from The Heritage Center of Red Cloud Indian School and feature 42 oils, watercolors and acrylic paintings as well as ceramic sculptures by contemporary Native American artists.
Featured artists blend the traditional bold colors and symbolism of tribal artwork with contemporary elements, such as graffiti, to bring a modern perspective to their heritage.
“This exhibit truly captures the essence and power of contemporary Native American art,” said Lynn Verschoor, the museum’s director. “We are delighted to share this unique and beautiful collection with patrons.”
Peter Strong, curator of the Heritage Center in Pine Ridge, will be available for discussion at the museum April 24 at 10 a.m. A public reception follows that afternoon from 4:30 - 7 p.m. with a presentation at 5:30 p.m.
