Getting added to the list of 564 federally recognized Indian tribes is no easy task. "It's sort of a long, drawn-out process," said Stanley Speaks, regional director for the U.S. Department of the Interior's Indian Affairs. The relationship between Indian Affairs and the tribes is based on the U.S. Constitution, treaties, court decisions and federal statutes.
