Gov. Andrew Cuomo Urged to Back Catskills Casino
Sullivan County, New York area officials and union representatives urged Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D-New York) to support the Stockbridge-Munsee Community of Wisconsin's off-reservation casino in the Catskills, an area in upstate New York more than 1,000 miles from its land base, at a session in Albany on July 13.
Supporters want Cuomo to send a letter to the Bureau of Indian Affairs to endorse the plan. The project was rejected on February 18, 2011. But efforts were revived when the Obama administration rescinded a "guidance memo" originally issued January 3, 2008 that made it very difficult for tribes to acquire land away from existing reservations.
Assemblywoman Aileen Gunther (D-Forestburg) called the meeting positive, reported Mid Hudson News.
