A life-size oil portrait of Kateri Tekakwitha will be featured at the Shrine of Our Lady of Martyrs’ October 21 mass and ceremony of her canonization.
The portrait, by painter Kevin Gordon, was originally commissioned by the National Museum of Catholic Art. It was exhibited in September at the Museum at the Italian Embassy in Washington, D.C. where it was blessed by His Eminence Donald Cardinal Wuerl, Archbishop of Washington and praised by the U.S. Ambassador to the Holy See Miguel Diaz.
“I’m pleased by the warmly moving reception my painting of Saint Kateri is receiving, and honored that its first truly public unveiling will be at the Shrine of the Martyrs in her hometown on the long-awaited day of her canonization, surrounded by those who have come to love her as I have,” Gordon said in a press release. “I worked hard to make this depiction of Saint Kateri as historically accurate as possible and spent months in research. The portrait expresses her calm strength and resolute faith, and it is rich in Mohawk, Algonquin and Iroquois symbolism, which I hope pleases not only those Native Americans who view it, but inspires all who see it.”
The painting measures 54 inches by 39 inches and can be seen by visiting the Shrine of Our Lady of Martyrs, on Route 5S in Auriesville, New York. The Shrine will hold a Mass of Thanksgiving to celebrate the canonization of the blessed Kateri Tekakwitha in Rome, Italy. For more information, visit the Shrine website.
