Chickasaw Nation Ready for 2013 Tribal Elections

The Chickasaw Nation Election Commission is gearing up for the 2013 General Elections.

The commission announced that the filing period will be open June 3 to June 5 and all candidates must file between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. in the election secretary’s office in the Government Services Building, 2015 Lonnie Abbott Industrial Boulevard, Ada, Oklahoma.

There are five seats up for election this year – four of them are legislative seats, with one seat being on the Supreme Court. The legislative seats up for election are: Seat 5 of Pontotoc District, Seat 3 of Pickens District, Seat 1 of Panola District, and Seat 2 of the Tishomingo District according to a Chickasaw Nation press release.

As for the Supreme Court seat up for election it is seat 1.

To be considered an eligible candidate for the legislative seats those interested must be a registered Chickasaw voter at least 25 years of age and a resident of the Chickasaw Nation for at least one year, and their respective districts for at least six months immediately preceding the election.

If elected, legislators must remain a resident of their elected district during their tenure of office – three-year term.

Anyone interested in vying for the Supreme Court seat must be a judge residing within the Chickasaw Nation throughout the three-year term of office upon winning.

Filing fees for both legislative and judicial elections are $500.

Those interested should bring verification of physical and mailing address, such as a utility bill or homestead exemption and filing fee with them to the election secretary’s office. Candidates must not have been convicted of a felony and background checks will be conducted. Those filing will be required to complete a financial disclosure statement – statements will be asked at the end of every month during the candidate’s active campaign period.

All candidates will be given an electoral packet containing election rules and regulations, the Chickasaw Constitution, financial disclosure forms, biography form for the Chickasaw Times, and watcher form.

The primary election will be July 30 with a run-off election August 27 if needed.
