Tribes Say School Should Drop Offensive Redskins Mascot

July 06, 2013

The Shoshone-Bannock Tribes made it clear to Teton High School officials Monday that they find the school's "Redskins" mascot disprespectful and support a decision to drop it. The Teton, Idaho-based school officials met with tribal leaders in Fort Hall on the tribes' reservation. It's not so clear, though, that the school really will abandon their Native mascot.

District superintendent Monte Woolstenhulme previously and apparently unilaterally decided to discard Teton High's Redskins mascot and logo. But after a meeting with district chairman Doug Peterson, Woolstenhulme decided that he may have acted hastily and that community input would be sought at a board meeting July 8. That meeting is expected to be crowded with vocal members of the community who do not want the Redskins mascot replaced.

Tribal spokeswoman Randy'l Teton says they need to understand and respect each other's cultures, according to the Associated Press.
