Colbert ‘Reports’ on Dan Snyder’s New Foundation

On his Colbert Report Wednesday evening, Stephen Colbert took a satirical swipe at Dan Snyder’s recent insensitivity to Native Americans by creating the Washington Redskins Original Americans Foundation.

The foundation was announced on March 24 in a letter Snyder posted on the team’s website. The foundation has been criticized as a cynical way to defuse criticism over his team’s name.

After Colbert batted around Snyder’s questionable commitment to the Native community,he reintroduced his “beloved” character Ching-Chong Ding-Dong, and parodied Snyder’s foundation by announcing that he was starting a charity with a name that would clearly offend Asians Americans and others.

I saw this when it aired on Wednesday and was happy to know that Stephen Colbert had taken on the issue. More people will undoubtedly be aware of the problem now that he's aired it on his show. The news media is too chicken to pay much attention to the controversy (they don't want to lose an audience) and most news is too biased to present it. Many of the nation's young obtain their news from Colbert and The Daily Show and, to be honest, they do a much better job than the big news networks.

As an addendum: Colbert received a lot of backlash for this episode. The furor was caused by his assertion that his Ching-Chong Ding-Dong Foundation was an actual organization. This was furthered by the right-wing media who was calling for his show's cancellation. Some people just don't understand satire.

Colbert did a great job of showing the hypocrisy of Dan Snyder by PROVING IT....with his OWN. The power of a name. A shame that Snyder seems to be unable to understand.
