Majority Leader Harry Reid Says Snyder’s Foundation a ‘Phony Deal’

But it’s not going to get any easier for Snyder to live in the Maryland/D.C. area. President Obama and several Congressional Members have already supported changing the team’s name.

Sen. Maria Cantwell and Rep. Tom Cole sent a letter to Goodell insisting that the name is a racial slur and must change; House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi recently said that the U.S. Patent Office should not protect ‘Redskins’; and, in a press release highly critical of Snyder’s new foundation, Rep. Betty McCollum  said in a press release, “Team owner Dan Snyder wants to keep profiting from his team’s racist brand and use those profits to attempt to buy the silence of Native Americans with a foundation that is equal parts public relations scheme and tax deduction.

“Snyder has to realize, he is on the losing side of history,” Reid said. “And the sooner he does it, the better off we are.”

WHY not use the 'outrage' and verbal assaults to the US Federal Government than on a topic that NEVER enters into the discussions of the every-day, common elders, families, struggling to survive on the Reservation today? I visited my families yesterday, and we re-acquainted, had supper first, talked, and made plans for next visit. Not once, no talk was evered mentioned of "Redskin" or any deragutory events-incidents! Instead we talked of common struggles (typical of America - more obviously though to Indian America) - their health followups, overpriced food items, vehicle - house disrepair, ongoing community vandalism, and of course the upcoming local tribal politics for 'reelection'. I am positive their are plenty of NATIVE, like me, who are much rather concerned with helping direct family SURVIVE than have the luxury or time to be concerned over a irrelevant topic. The real crime is the US Federal Govt system and THOSE "PROMISES" since 2007 that obviously haven't flowed down to the community-level. It is still quite obvious the disrepair, squallar of my parent's community and the dis-regard by local tribal politicians (but up untill now - since local election season is coming up). THe joke amongst the local elders in native tongue, is "you see my 'brother' 'sister' before election when they come and ask you to support them, donate to their election, help in their food stand, then when they get elected - they never come around. But since they want to run for office again - they will be showing up again and asking for my help…..again". In reality a "REDSKIN" to the regular indian today struggling to survive, is from standing in line at the local tribal center from being sunburned, being overcomed with emotion - embarrassed, shame, slight anger - after being told tribal services are closed, limited, empty. That is the real definition to "REDSKIN" today.

I'm guessing by the following statements that both Snyder and Goddell are both Conservatives: " “I think Dan is being very responsible in listening," Goodell said. "It's also very clear when you look at public opinion, when you look at the polls that 90 percent of Redskins fans support the name. They believe it's something that represents pride. And the general population also supports it overwhelmingly. He's trying to be responsible in listening and recognizing that people have differing views.” They're so wrong about everything they believe is true that it's a clear case of believing those who you've paid to gather info that supports what you ALREADY believe. Also, tmsyr11: I've heard this assertion before and you're right to take care of your family BEFORE worrying about this issue, BUT you have to realize that unless we demand respect for our people issues like this will continue. Certainly African-Americans didn't clear up all the problems they face BEFORE taking on the N-word, why should NDNs be expected to?
