Miles Thompson Leads Iroquois Nationals to World Lax Semifinals
The Iroquois Nationals’ win over Scotland last night earned them a spot in the FIL World Championship semifinals. The team is 4-2 overall in the tournament.
Miles Thompson scored four goals and two assists helping the team advance to a 10-8 win, and setting up a rematch, must-win scenario against Canada; and Randy Staats had two goals and two assists. Goalie Warren Hill also had a strong night making 12 saves.
"He played well, that's why he's our starter," said Iroquois head coach Steve Beville of Hill after the game. "He got a little shell-shocked last night, but I think our defense let him down [against Team USA]. We're counting on him to take us through this thing, and if we're gonna get it done, he's going to have to keep playing like this all the time," Beville told Lacrosse Magazine.
Lyle Thompson, a key player for the Nationals, missed last night’s game. The U of Albany standout was in Los Angeles for the ESPY Awards after receiving a nomination for Best Male College Athlete. Doug McDermott, who finished his final season at Creighton University as the NCAA’s fifth all-time leading scorer (3,150 points), took home the honor.
But the Nationals are focused on their next game, against Canada. Canada won a tough-fought match between the two on July 13 after a goal by Curtis Dickson with just under 20 seconds left. But Beville said that his team has been preparing.
“It’s just an absolutely brutal format. We’re talking about seven games in seven days. It’s just trying to find that medium,” Beville told Inside Lacrosse. “How much do you want to eat when you get back to the hotel? How much do you want to rest? Do you want to keep them moving just a little bit? At this point, I think it’s all about rest and them being ready to fire up. But I think from a mental standpoint, if you can’t get fired up for a semifinal game in a world championship, there’s something going wrong with you. So I expect to see both teams extremely excited for tomorrow.
“We’re still trying to get out of box mode with a lot of these guys,” Beville said. “I think it showed up a little bit again today. We’re going to review a little bit of film and be ready for Canada tomorrow.”
