Spokane Tribal Chairman Rudy Peone will compete this weekend in an extreme obstacle race to benefit St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital.

The Warrior Dash World Championship will take place on October 18 in Esparto, California. The 3.2 mile course includes 12 obstacles, including walls, mud, fire, tires and water. Peone qualified by placing in the Top 3 at a Northwest regional Warrior Dash last month.

For Peone, entering the Warrior Dash World Championship is part of a commitment to leading a healthy lifestyle and creating a strong body and spirit.

Running and exercise is big part of Peone’s life, born partly out of personal tumult. Within a few years, Peone experienced a series of life-changing events: his eldest son was involved in a serious car accident, he lost an infant son, he was remarried, and he was elected to the Spokane Tribal Council. Now serving as tribal chairman, Peone intimately interacts with people facing illness, addiction and loss.

To encourage physical and spiritual health, Peone began to run competitively, and getting others involved. He dedicates his race performance to members of his family and tribe, and has helped organized numerous local fun runs.

“Many times I run with a group or individuals at their own pace so that folks understand that running and living a healthy lifestyle is for everyone,” said Peone. “It is not just solely for the best of the best. As the Tribal Chairman I feel an obligation on every level to represent my people in the most positive fashion I can, as a true servant and reflection of and for the people.”

During the Warrior Dash World Championship, Peone will be wearing a running jersey embossed with his tribe's name in its Salish language; a testament to the Tribe’s commitment to strength and resiliency.
