Native Groups to Rally Against Redskins in Minneapolis

Not Your Mascots, AIM, and several other Native American groups including Idle No More plan to march and protest on Sunday when the NFL’s Washington Redskins play the Minnesota Vikings in Minneapolis.

The protesters will rally against the name Redskins, the protection of which was recently rejected by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office because it was deemed disparaging and offensive to Native Americans. Opposition to the team name has come from numerous tribal organizations and tribal leaders, the National Congress of American Indians, the U.S. Congress, President Obama, 50 United State Senators, civil rights and religious groups, and players and icons in the sports industry.

Native American groups and grassroots organizations have already led protests during the 2014 NFL season. On October 13, at least 150 protesters gathered in Arizona urging the team to change its name ahead of the Cardinals Redskins game.

The panel begins at 1:00p.m. at the Crowne Plaza St. Paul Riverfront Hotel

#NotYourMascot rally will start gathering at 8:30 a.m.CST on November 2 at American Indian OIC, 1845 East Franklin, in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The march will commence at 9:00 a.m. and end at TCF Stadium, according to the groups Facebook page.

It would be nice to think that an appeal to emotion would change Snyder's mind, but we're just going to have to face the fact that he's an asshole and doesn't care what you think, what your children think or what the general public thinks.

We must not forget to count our blessings even in the face of controversy and an ignorant society. In the course of all actions, be it in the media or public demonstrations, mascots have changed in educational institutions and the public has been enlightened about the atrocities of a word that needed to stricken from all publications. Perhaps, Snyder will never bend, but many hugely distributed newspapers have adopted guideline/policy to refrain from using the R-word. Now, we see that this issue is bringing to light the social ills existing in Indian country to a broader public awareness, i.e. suicide, drugs, diabetes, substandard housing and the incessant poverty levels. These scheduled protests are indeed a blessing. Our opportunistic means must not be passed up by completing focusing on the NFL powers-that-be who only see green. (NFL = Non Formidable League)
