Ron Baker, Potawatomie, Makes Final Ballot for Wooden Award

Ron Baker plays guard for the 12th-ranked Wichita State Shockers, and he's just been named one of the country's elite players, in keeping with the stellar season he's been having on the court. The junior from Scott City, Kansas, an enrolled member of the Citizen Band Potawatomie, is one of 15 players to be nominated for the John R. Wooden Award, given annually to the most outstanding player in college basketball.

Baker is averaging a team-leading 15 points per game, as well as 2.5 assists and 4.5 rebounds. In a 2013 spotlight on the Citizen Band Potawatomie website, Baker was described as a "local legend" in Scott City; the brief piece also told of his choice to go to Wichita State without a scholarship his freshman year.

Baker is also one of five finalists for the Jerry West Award, given by the Basketball Hall of Fame to the nation's top shooting guard. That award has an online voting component; visit hoophallawards.com to cast a ballot.

Here are some highlights from Baker's 2013-14 season with the Shockers:
