The Indigenous Cultures Center (ICC) Native American Museum at Northland College in Ashland, Wisconsin will host an open house Friday, April 10 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Located on the first floor of Mead Hall, this event is open to the public.

The museum was recently selected to participate in the federally-funded Museum Assessment Program (MAP). As part of this assessment, museum staff will be asking visitors to complete a short survey on exhibits and the museum’s mission.

Museum Coordinator and Assistant Professor of Native American Studies Karissa White is currently working with an on-campus assessment team and a national museum consultant to lead a self-study that will enable museum staff to learn about and implement best practices in the museum field.

“The assessment process will help us strengthen our operating systems, build outreach capacity, and maintain and improve our collections in response to regional Native American tribal priorities,” White said.

The Native American Museum was established in 2011 with the goal of expressing the history, language, arts, and culture of the Ojibwe people for the educational benefit of community members and visitors to the Chequamegon Bay area, White said.

Since 1981, the MAP program has served more than 4,300 museums and is supported through a cooperative agreement between the American Alliance of Museums and the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS), which is the primary source of federal support for the nation’s 123,000 libraries and 17,500 museums. Participation in and accomplishments achieved through this free program will position the ICC Native American Museum as a well-qualified candidate for other IMLS funding.

For more information, contact Professor Karissa White at mailto:[email protected] or 715-682-1354. To make a gift to the museum, please send a check made to Northland College (1411 Ellis Avenue, Ashland, WI 54806) and designate “Native American Museum” in the memo line.
