On Thursday, July 9, U.S. Secretary of the Interior Sally Jewell delivered the opening remarks at the first White House Tribal Youth Gathering, part of the Obama Administration's Generation Indigenous (Gen-I) initiative “to remove barriers standing between Native youth and opportunities to succeed.”

The Gathering, which proved to be a tremendous success and hosted more than 1,000 young people representing 230 tribes from 42 states as announced by Michelle Obama provided opportunities for Native Youth to interact directly with senior Administration officials and the White House Council on Native American Affairs. The White House Tribal Youth Gathering was collaboration between the White House and UNITY Inc.

In an interview with ICTMN, Secretary Jewell discussed her impression of the momentous event, and how the U.S. Government was working to improve Indian country for Native youth.
