Call for Presentation Proposals: Cumberland County Historical Society
The Cumberland County Historical Society, which will proudly hold its second biennial symposium on the history of the Carlisle Indian Industrial School (CIIS) on October 7-9, 2016 in Carlisle, Pennsylvania, is now seeking proposals.
We are seeking proposals for presentations related to the theme of the year’s event, “Celebrating the American Indian Sports Legacy.” We welcome proposals from tribal members, community historians, scholars, CIIS descendants, activists, and students. We are seeking presentations that explore the past, but also ones that look at the present and to the future of American Indians in sports.
ICTMN publisher Ray Halbritter, CEO of Oneida Nation Enterprises for three-plus decades, a Harvard Law graduate and a former ironworker will also be taking part in the symposium.
The Carlisle Indian Industrial School left an indelible mark upon the sports that Indigenous Americans have played over the past century and a half. Our goal is to spark conversations about identity, cultural preservation, stereotypes, inequality, inclusion and innovation.
Email proposal abstracts and vita/resume, including any tribal enrollment/affiliation, under the subject line “Carlisle Journeys 2016,” to Cumberland County Historical Society Carlisle Journeys Symposium, [email protected].
Proposals sent through the mail should be sent to: Carlisle Journeys, Cumberland County Historical Society, 21 N. Pitt St., Carlisle, Pennsylvania 17013. Call 717-249-7610 for more information. Deadline for applications is March 1, 2016.
