The Institute of American Indian Arts (IAIA) has announced a search for Artists-in-Residence. Native American and First Nations artists interested in an expenses-paid chance to create their art in a community of like-minded artists can apply for the program, which is offering a series of retreats between September 2016 and April 2017.

The deadline to apply is Friday, April 22nd at midnight, and the opportunity is open to Native/ First Nation artists in the following regions:

Pacific Northwest (Oregon, Washington, British Columbia, or Alaska)

Upper Midwest (Minnesota, Wisconsin, North Dakota, South Dakota),

Southwest (Arizona, New Mexico, Southern California)

Selected participants will obtain a one-month residency of making, demonstrating and exhibiting their art. Artists will receive a $3,000 stipend, a $500 art materials budget, a meal plan for one person, a rental car (if needed, including $200 gas allowance), studio space, and airfare to and from your home town to the IAIA campus in Santa Fe, New Mexico. This in-residence artist program is not a teaching position, so artists will focus solely on making art.

According to the IAIA release, “This program provides opportunities for Native and First Nations artists from the selected regions to come to the Institute of American Indian Arts campus in Santa Fe, New Mexico for a month of art-making and interaction with IAIA students, staff/faculty, and the Santa Fe arts community. Applicants whose work engages with cultural traditions through materials, techniques and/or subject matter are particularly encouraged to apply.”

Artists who are accepted will also get to participate in a student critique session, two classroom/workshop demonstrations of their art for the students and an additional one for the public.The IAIA will also host an opening and closing reception so artists can mingle with the Santa Fe artist community.

Last year’s 2015/2016 program featured a wide array of participants to include Glenda Mckay (Ingalik-Athabascan), Jonathan Loretto (Cochiti), Ed Archie NoiseCat (Shuswap/St'itLimx, Salish), Dyani White Hawk (Sicangu Lakota/Rosebud Sioux), Gerald Clarke Jr. (Cahuilla Band of Indians), James Luna (Pooyoukitchum/Ipi/Mexican-American), Joe Feddersen (Colville Confederated Tribes), Drew Michael (Yupik and Inupiaq), Jonathan Thunder (Red Lake Ojibwe), Royce Manuel (Ak-Mierl Aw-Thum/Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community), Debbie Manuel (Diné), Rory Eler Wakemup (Minnesota Chippewa Tribe), and Natalie Ball (Modoc/Klamath.)
