MGM Fights Casino at Bradley International Airport in Connecticut

MGM Resorts International has come out swinging against a potential tribal casino at Bradley International Airport in Windsor Locks, Connecticut, just 17 miles away from the operator's $950 MGM Springfield resort currently under construction, slated to open in 2018. MGM filed suit in federal court to lobby Congress to release documents concerning the airport proposal. But a recent report from the state's Freedom of Information Commission reveals the Connecticut Airport Authority (CAA) is not required under the state's right-to-know laws to share details of its negotiations.

The CAA and town of Windsor Locks are looking to team up with the Mashantucket Pequot Tribe and the Mohegan Tribal Gaming Authority to build a casino that would see an estimated 10,000 customers daily. Daily foot traffic at the Bradley airport is about 17,000.

While MGM's campaign against the Mashantucket-Mohegan partnership has been intensive, northeast gaming expert Clyde Barrow told that it's understandable, given the quickly growing casino market in the northeast.

"Overall, the market in New England is continuing to grow," Barrow said. "But there will be a saturation point."

Kevin A. Dillon, executive director of the Connecticut Airport Authority, said:

It is quite unfortunate that, after failing thus far in their extensive litigation and federal lobbying efforts, MGM has decided to expend even more resources on a public relations campaign that completely mischaracterizes the Connecticut Airport Authority’s proposal for casino development at Bradley International Airport. This desperate attempt at fear-mongering is just another chapter in MGM’s increasingly alarming track record of distorting the truth to protect its business interests and maximize its financial gain at the expense of the CAA. The CAA believes that it is important to correct these inaccuracies so the public understands the reality of the situation.
