Hannahville Indian Community’s Sweetgrass Golf Club Named to Another ‘Best of’ List

Since its 2008 opening, Sweetgrass Golf Club in Michigan's Upper Peninsula has consistently ranked as a top-20 public course in Michigan by publications such as Golfweek and Golf.

Now the home of the Symetra Tour's Island Resort Championship has been named to Golf Vacation Insider's list of Best Golf & Casino Resorts in the United States. The affiliated, tribal-owned Island Resort and Casino was one of few properties nationwide named to the top tier (Platinum).

Golf Vacation Insider employs a mathematician and statistician to analyze rankings, ratings and reviews from dozens of credible sources across golf, lodging, dining, and off-course activities to identify properties offering the best overall experiences.

“We're honored to receive this distinction,” said Tony Mancilla, Island Resort and Casino general manager. “Golf is an important part of the Island experience, so much so that we're currently building another course.”

Island Resort & Casino's Sweetgrass Golf Club has a sister course, Sage Run, slated to open as soon as late summer 2017, similarly designed by Paul Albanese of the golf course architecture firm Albanese & Lutzke.

"Sweetgrass Golf Club is everything a casino golf course should be, and Island Casino complements it very nicely. We're pleased to award the resort a place in the Platinum division of our list," said Tim Gavrich, managing editor of Golf Vacation Insider.

To complement its world-class golf, gaming and entertainment, Island Resort & Casino recently opened the all-new Drift Spa, one of resort's many amenities.

Island Resort and Casino boasts more than 1,200 slot machines and 24/7 Vegas-style gaming. Lodging options at the resort include guest rooms, 14 elegant suites, and a 42-site RV Park. The resort is also home to the brand-new Drift Spa, a sports bar and multiple restaurants.

Signature Hole No. 15

Golfers traverse a steel and wood bridge across a pond to reach the island green for Sweetgrass Golf Club’s signature hole, No. 15, a par-3. The green’s generous size only slightly offsets the challenge of carrying all that water and factoring in the prevailing breezes.
