Louie Gong Presents 'Mockups' Tonight at NMAI

December 08, 2012

On Saturday night, at the National Museum of the American Indian in Washington, DC, artist Louie Gong, Nooksack, will lead an evening of artistic exploration and participation with music provided by local DJ Will Eastman.

The event is called Design Yourself: IAMNMAI, and it will involve Gong's "Mockups," described by the museum as an "art toy." The Mockups are seven-inch-long molded plastic shoes that attendees are invited to use as blank canvases to express themselves however they see fit. It's a logical activity for Gong, who is known for his custom shoes, a pursuit that began when he drew a design on a pair with a Sharpie back in 2008 -- that act of creativity evolved into Gong's design firm Eighth Generation.

Native artists Chris Pappan (Osage/Kaw/Cheyenne River Lakota Sioux) and wife Debra Yepa-Pappan (Jemez Pueblo) will be present, as will local artists Lisa Schumaier and Lee Newman. For more information, visit nmai.si.edu.
