The 39th Annual American Indian Film Festival (AIFF) ended, as always, with the American Indian Motion Picture Awards Show (AIMPAS), an event held on November 9 at the Palace of Fine Arts in San Francisco. Two of the most acclaimed Native films in recent years, Rhymes for Young Ghouls and Drunktown's Finest, were big winners, and LaDonna Harris was honored—you can see our previous story for a list of who won what.
Like any good awards ceremony, the show itself was entertaining, with musicians, comedians, actors and actresses coming together to celebrate the medium of film and those who make it. There were tributes to two towering figures lost within the last 12 months—actress Misty Upham and comedian Charlie Hill. Hosts Eddie Spears and Tonantzin Carmelo kept the show moving, and the Yaaw Tei Yi dancers wowed the audience with their moves and colorful regalia, under the watchful eye of the Native actress painted by Steven Paul Judd for the Festival's program.
Many thanks to photographer Sage Andrew Romero for capturing these images. For more information about AIFF and AIMPAS, visit AIFISF.com.
