X-Men Movie Spinoff ‘New Mutants’ Should Include Dani Moonstar
Fox has announced its plan to expand the X-Men movie franchise by making a film based on the comic series’ first spinoff, a Marvel Comics title called The New Mutants. The series launched in 1983 (having debuted in a standalone graphic novel the prior year) and depicted the adventures of a younger class of mutants learning to live with and wield their powers under the guidance of Charles Xavier.
A Cheyenne girl named Dani Moonstar was among the first five characters; her original codename was Psyche, but she later changed it to Mirage. Her power is the ability to look into the minds of others and create illusions based on their fears or desires. Mirage became co-leader of the team with Cannonball, and also developed a close friendship with Wolfsbane, both of whom were among the original team members.
The New Mutants, like The X-Men, featured a periodically shifting lineup; over the course of its initial 150-issue run, more than 20 characters spent some length of time on the team. Mirage was without a doubt one of the key members, departing in issue 87 to live in Asgard as a Valkyrie with a flying horse (no, really, that’s what happened). Will Dani Moonstar get the call for the New Mutants movie?
And if—when—she does, what actress should play her? Kawennahere Devery Jacobs, Mohawk, who drew rave reviews for Rhymes for Young Ghouls, would be a good choice, as would Shay Eyre, Cheyenne/Arapaho, who co-starred in Empire of Dirt.
