Featured Photo: Mule Deer in the Spiritual Heart of Shoshone Homeland
The Tosawihi Complex, which encompasses scores of square miles in northern Nevada, is the spiritual heart of Western Shoshone traditional homeland, and where this image was taken.
Mule deer are seen here sprinting through sagebrush and rabbit brush. The latter has turned yellow, signaling that the pine nuts that are a traditional part of the Western Shoshone diet are ready to pick; it is time for a trip to the mountains where they flourish.
