ICTMN has learned that Navajo Code Talker Albert Smith has passed away. The news was announced by the Our Navajo Code Talkers Facebook page earlier today. Smith, 89, from Gallup, New Mexico, walked on this morning, April 17.

I had the honor of inviting
I had the honor of inviting Albert to join other Code Talkers for the New York City Veterans Day Parade this past November. He participated in the presentation to the Code Talkers of the original sculptor's model of the Iwo Jima statue. As I write this, that statue is on its way to the Code Talker Foundation in Lupton. I regret that Albert did not stay with us long enough to see the statue arrive. I will always remember his vibrant spirit and esprit d' corps. When the Marine's Hymn was sung ,he stood ramrod straight and at attention. Semper Fi, Marine.
