Tachine, a member of the Navajo tribe, leads the program Native SOAR, or Student Outreach, Access and Resiliency. The program matches Native American graduates and staff who serve as mentors to Native American college students, who then, in turn, serve as mentors to Native American high school students. The program is aimed at helping more Native American students graduate from high school and college.

Tachine says she hopes the recognition helps her reach more students.
